Port of Karlshamn

Port of Karlshamn if one of the largest in Sweden and is the largest and deepest in the south-east There are six port areas with altogether 3 kilometres of quay and more than 1.000.000 m2 of surface area. The sea approach is short and easily navigated. The port is free of ice and unaffected by tides. Most of the vessels permitted to enter the Baltic Sea can call Karlshamn as HandySize and small PanMax for dry goods and tankers up to about 100,000 dwt. The Port of Karlshamn has the capacity to handle all types of cargo and all sizes of vessel. Main products handled are forestry products, liquid petroleum products, RoRo, containers and project cargo.
The port has 50.000 m2 storage capacity in warehouses and 500.000 m3 for petroleum producs, biofuels and chemicals.
Port of Karlshamn in Sweden is an up-comer in the south Baltic Sea although the city has several hundred years of tradition in shipping and trade. In 20 years the cargo turnover has grown 2 times. With the fast developing trade in the East-West corridor, Port of Karlshamn has become a progressive national hub with strategic importance for intermodal traffic between south Scandinavia and East Europe/CIS. The RoPax- and RoRo- traffic between Karlshamn-Klaipeda served by DFDS Seaways is the line with most cargo between Sweden and the Baltic countries/Russia.
Port of Karlshamn has potential to grow as a container port. A big Liebherr 550 mobile crane and a water depth of 11 m, allows all container feeder vessels trading the Baltic Sea to call Port of Karlshamn. The region has plenty of important industry. With geographical location in southeast Sweden at the main navigation routes, Karlshamn gives a perfect access for both regional container flows overseas and the expanding Short Sea traffic in the Baltic Sea.
The rail terminal has capacity for 2 trains of more than 600 m and 25.000 m2 of fenced storage area next to the port.
To the opposite of many ports and cities, Karlshamn was located outside the city centre already in the 70-ies. All traffic by road and rail is therefore routed outside habited areas. Therefore there are also lots of expansion areas. Adjacent to the port the Municipality has made 100 hectares of land available for new activities within logistics and industry.
With has a strategic location at the cross-roads between Scandinavia and the emerging markets and has the region with most industry in south Sweden, generating cargo flows to both east and west. Just outside the port, goes the major route for shipping serving the Baltic Sea and with deep water, short and easy navigation. Shipping and Logistics is important in the city and there is with no surprise Karlshamn has one of the ten largest Shipping and Logistics clusters in Sweden with the port, shipping agents, Pilot Station, regional Customs head office, logistics providers, University with research within IT-Logistics etc.
